About
I am curious by nature. I am attentive to detail. I like simple. But love complex. I believe we are here to learn. I am fascinated at how civilizations separated by oceans began practicing similar things around the same time in history. I wonder about collective consciousness. I believe our existence continues after our bodies fall away. So how does this tie into soil? I would have to say that soil came later - first into my realm of vision, second into my realm of concern. We humans with all our infinite capacity to observe, connect, conceive, create, do, etc. seem to have once understood our place in the natural world, but somewhere along the line have been sidetracked by our capabilities; fascinated by our intelligence, we may have romanced ourselves into forgetting our place in nature. So many of us quit observing how nature works. We seem to believe we can overcome any natural obstacle by human ingenuity. I know that on the surface our substitutes work for awhile, but later we are faced with a disaster. To begin with our invention fills the bill, but when it quits filling the bill, we don’t quite seem capable of accepting such a turn of events.
Isn’t this where we have come to with our relationship to the soil? We have been buying cheap, easy, convenient additives, we have believed those who have the most effective lobbies, or ad campaign’s, and on some deeper level we have been afraid to question what isn’t working. We are afraid to make waves, even when we know in our gut something is wrong. I am seriously concerned by our attitudes, by our need to disconnect from reality, and our refusal to inconvenience ourselves in any way. If we do not take seriously the poor state of our soil, and the consequences of inadequate land management; if we do not take the time to connect with where our food will come from if our soil become incapable of growing – this human species will simply parish. I say go into your garden if you have one, or your park if you have one, and put your hand in the soil – get curious about what you are holding, observe what you can see, know that even though you may not be able to see all that you are holding, you are holding the capacity to grow, to thrive. In the end there isn’t a huge difference between the ecosystem to the human digestive system, and the ecosystem of the soil. They both require nutrition. They both require care.
